Broadcasting House

Fitzrovia is the home of the BBC. Broadcasting House, its headquarters, stands on the corner of Portland Place and Langham Place. Ever since the BBC made its first radio broadcast, on 15 March, 1932, London’s writers have found work here, and the famous Art Deco building has been the inspiration for some of their best known scenes. Dylan Thomas was commissioned to broadcast live poetry readings in the 1940s. Once after a little too much whisky, he was found fast asleep and snoring into the microphone. The shock of being woken by his producer sobered Thomas enough to deliver his reading with just a few slurred words. Penelope Fitzgerald drew on her wartime experiences working at Broadcasting House in Human Voices (1980), a satire of life working in the BBC during the Second World War.
